Sunderland 2-1 Brentford: Highlights, man of the match, stats as Wilson Isidor scores last-gasp winner

Iconic Isidor scores last-gasp winner as Sunderland sensationally beat Brentford

Sunderland secured a stunning last-gasp 2-1 victory over Brentford at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon thanks to Wilson Isidor's late winner.

Sunderland may have dominated the ball in the opening 45 minutes, but the Black Cats failed to register a shot on target, while Brentford had the best moment of the half when Dango Ouattara found the net, only for VAR to intervene for an offside earlier in the move, leaving the score level heading into the break.

The second half saw much more action, with Kevin Schade missing a penalty before Igor Thiago gave the visitors the lead, only for Enzo Le Fee to immediately respond from the spot, and Sunderland eventually secured a winner at the death as Isidor headed home in added time.

SPORTS MOLE'S VERDICT

A draw was arguably a fair reflection of today's match, with both teams showing plenty of attacking threat and having numerous chances to score, but Isidor managed to sensationally steal the points late on.

The Black Cats will be disappointed to have not taken advantage of the huge possession they held in the first 45 minutes, with the hosts taking just three shots, though Brentford must be credited for their defensive structure.

Possession switched hands in the second half, with Brentford holding more of the ball as they had far more attacks, including taking the lead, but two late goals helped Sunderland secure a brilliant victory.

SUNDERLAND VS. BRENTFORD HIGHLIGHTS

59th min: Kevin Schade (Brentford) penalty miss

Schade misses the penalty!

Reinildo foolishly pulls down Nathan Collins inside the penalty area, and the referee quickly points to the spot.

Schade takes a slow run-up, but his penalty is unconvincing as Robin Roefs stands tall and saves for Sunderland.

77th min: Sunderland 0-1 Brentford (Igor Thiago)

Brentford finally have the breakthrough - Thiago fires the visitors into the lead!

Brentford are brilliantly building up around the Sunderland box on the right side, working the ball to Frank Onyeka to cross into the box.

Onyeka clips a pinpoint cross toward Thiago at the back post, and the striker heads into the floor, off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

82nd min: Sunderland 1-1 Brentford (Enzo Le Fee)

Brentford's lead did not last long - Le Fee equalises from the spot!

Sunderland deliver a corner into the area and Rico Henry pulls down Habib Diarra, and the referee once again points to the penalty spot.

Le Fee takes responsibility for the hosts, and the midfielder sends the keeper the wrong way to draw Sunderland level.

96th min: Sunderland 2-1 Brentford (Wilson Isidor)

Unbelievable, Sunderland have won it in the dying moments - Isidor is the Black Cats hero!

The ball is played back to Granit Xhaka on the edge of the Brentford area, and the midfielder whips a delightful cross into the box.

Isidor finds space between the two central defenders heads low and past the keeper, sending the Stadium of Light into dreamland!

MAN OF THE MATCH - WILSON ISIDOR

The forward scored from the bench in the opening match of the season against West Ham United, and Isidor did it once again today as he proved Sunderland's hero.

The game looked destined to end in a draw, with both having plenty of chances in an action-packed second half, but Isidor's stunning header was the difference to secure all three points.
