David Moyes named as new Sunderland manager

Sunderland announce that David Moyes has been appointed as the club's new manager on a four-year contract.

Sunderland have announced that David Moyes has been appointed as the club's new manager.

On Friday, it was confirmed that Sam Allardyce had left the Stadium of Light to take the England job, and the Black Cats have wasted little time in appointing a replacement.

Moyes has been linked with a number of jobs since leaving Real Sociedad last year but he has now penned a four-year contract to become the North-East club's fifth permanent manager since December 2011.

The Scot told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have joined Sunderland. I am relishing the challenge and excited by the opportunity.

"I have taken over a big British club with a great support, and I'm looking forward to working in the Premier League again. I look forward to continuing the good work done by Sam."

Moyes spent 11 years at Everton between 2002 and 2013 but he lasted under 10 months in charge at Manchester United after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.
