Martin O'Neill admits that Sunderland are aiming to avoid defeat at Everton.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has said that his side are aiming to 'just be in the hat' after this weekend's FA Cup tie against Everton at Goodison Park.

O'Neill, who led Aston Villa to the semi-finals of the competition in 2010, insists that Sunderland want to go the distance. However, he admits that the Black Cats must take it one stage at a time.

"There are eight teams left in the competition, that's all," he said. "We are going to go for it.

"We would love to be in the hat whenever the draw is made. If we are in the hat, at least we give ourselves a chance. There are some major teams left in it."

Meanwhile, Sunderland are in eighth place – level with Everton – in the Premier League.
