Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic insists that his side need a bare minimum of 40 points to survive this season and are targeting a bigger total.

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has declared that his side are looking to maintain high standards and go beyond 40 points in their fight for survival.

The Potters have been dragged into a relegation battle after failing to win any of their last six Premier League matches.

With the gap between Stoke and the drop zone at just three points, Begovic has conceded that his side must rise to the challenge of a dogfight at the bottom of the table.

He is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "It's just like everything is going against us at the moment," he said.

"We were world beaters at Christmas. Now we're getting hit with top-corner screamers, penalties, this-way-or-that-way decisions. It's unbelievable the kind of run we're on.

"You just have to keep going, stand up and keep fighting. We realise we're in a dogfight. But we're setting our sights high, looking at 40 points, and beyond, to make sure."

Tony Pulis's side face daunting opposition in their next Premier League clash this weekend, with table-topping Manchester United visiting the Britannia Stadium.
