Preview: Stoke City vs. Hull City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Stoke City and Hull City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Stoke City head into Saturday's Championship fixture with Hull City looking for the victory which will keep them in the top five of the standings.

Meanwhile, Hull remain in the bottom three after failing to win a single game since the opening day of the season.

Despite collecting just four points from as many matches, Stoke have managed to retain their grip of a place in the playoffs after eight matches.

Michael O'Neill would have taken that scenario at the beginning of the season, but the Northern Irishman will now expect the Potters to kick on over the coming months.

Stoke have competition in all areas of the pitch, something which was proven on Tuesday evening as they recorded a 3-1 victory away at Watford in the EFL Cup third round.

Improvements need to be made in defence with five matches having passed by without a clean sheet, but the pending return of Tyrese Campbell will give this squad a considerable lift.

Stoke are one of five teams who still remain unbeaten at home in the Championship, their three victories all coming by a one-goal margin.

As far as Hull are concerned, Grant McCann will be content with the Tigers returning four points from as many games on the road this season.

However, eight matches have now passed by in all competitions without a win, heaping the pressure on a manager who guided this club to promotion during 2020-21.

Goals have been the main issue for Hull with Keane Lewis-Potter's consolation effort against Sheffield United ending his team's 10-hour-plus wait to find the back of the net.

Conceding 12 goals from eight matches is not the worst record for a club in Hull's position, but their fortunes will not change unless they find some form in the final third.

Team News

Stoke City's Nick Powell celebrates scoring their second goal on February 20, 2021© Reuters

Having proven his fitness against Watford, Nick Powell is expected to keep his place in the Stoke starting lineup.

Romaine Sawyers could potentially drop out of the side, while Jaden Brown appears likely to replace Abdallah Dipo Sima in attack.

Joe Allen will be assessed as he continues to recover from a toe injury, but Tommy Smith serves the final game of his three-match ban.

Tyler Smith is pushing for a chance in the Hull attack after providing the assist for Lewis-Potter's goal last weekend.

George Honeyman could be handed his first league start of the season after playing the second half versus the Blades, but Tom Huddlestone remains absent with a hamstring injury.

Stoke City possible starting lineup:
Bursik; Ostigard, Souttar, Wilmot; Ince, Vrancic, Clucas, Tymon; Powell; Brown, Surridge

Hull City possible starting lineup:
Ingram; Coyle, Bernard, Greaves, Elder; Honeyman, Smallwood; Wilks, Moncur, Lewis-Potter; Smith

Hull are under pressure to show something different at the bet365 Stadium given their recent dismal form. However, Stoke have made a habit of battling their way to result this seasons, and it could be no different on Saturday afternoon.
