Afellay suffers "serious" knee injury

Stoke City have confirmed that Ibrahim Afellay suffered a "serious" knee injury in training on Friday.

The news was announced via the Potters' official Twitter page after the 30-year-old was left out of the squad in this afternoon's Premier League match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It is not yet clear how long Afellay will be on the treatment table for, but manager Mark Hughes expects the Dutchman to "come back stronger".

Prior to kickoff, Hughes told Sky Sports News: "It's unfortunate for Ibrahim. He twisted his knee in training. He'll come back stronger with our support."

Afellay has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Stoke this season and has scored two goals.
