Report: Southampton begin talks with Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld

Southampton have reportedly began negotiations with Atletico Madrid over a permanent move for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at St Mary's, making 26 Premier League appearances and helping Southampton to the second-best defence in the league.

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be keen on hijacking the Saints' move, but, according to PA, Southampton are the first to have begun talks with the defender.

Alderweireld still has two years left on his Atletico contract. He joined the Spanish side from Ajax two years ago, but only made 12 La Liga appearances in his debut season before being sent to Southampton.
