Late Opara strike earns Kansas City win

Ike Opara scored an injury-time winner to hand Sporting Kansas City a dramatic victory over 10-man Real Salt Lake in their MLS clash.

The hosts started well early on and could have been ahead if not for a good clearance by Chance Meyers as he diverted Robbie Findley's cross away from Joao Plata, who would have had a tap-in at the back post.

Salt Lake did take the lead in the second half when Jimmy Nielsen came for a routine catch from a free kick but dropped the ball, allowing Findley to react and head it home from close range.

However, the home side were then reduced to 10 men as Chris Wingert was sent off for a second bookable offence when he hauled down Soony Saad.

Kansas City took advantage of this and drew themselves level through Saad when he turned the ball in from close range after a scramble in the six-yard area.

Real almost hit back late on as Olmes Garcia went on a mazy run down the left and drilled a powerful shot at goal, but Nielsen dove to his left to make a good stop.

Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Sporting stole the three points in the 97th minute when Opara rose highest in the penalty area to head home Graham Zusi's corner.
