How Spain could line up against Georgia

How Spain could line up against Georgia

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente is sweating over the fitness of Rodri ahead of his side's final Euro 2024 qualifying Group A game, which comes against Georgia on Sunday.

La Roja have already booked their tickets to Germany and will be guaranteed to progress as group winners with a victory this weekend, having eased past Cyprus 3-1 on Thursday evening.

However, Spain had to make do without the services of Rodri for that affair, as the Manchester City fulcrum reported discomfort in training, and it remains to be seen whether he is risked for a largely inconsequential battle.

Valencia left-back Jose Gaya is also touch-and-go as he manages a knee problem, but Mikel Oyarzabal will not be available, having sustained a hamstring injury in the first half of Thursday's game after scoring his side's second goal.

Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams should replace the Real Sociedad-bound Oyarzabal on the left-hand side of the three-pronged attack, which could have a completely new look to it if Joselu and Lamine Yamal are also sacrificed, despite also netting in Cyprus.

With a 72-hour turnaround, Alvaro Morata and Ferran Torres will surely come into contention for starting roles, and the same can be said for Fabian Ruiz, who might be promoted to the first XI in place of Gavi.

Should Rodri not be given the green light to play, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino will be expected to hold their spots in the engine room, while left-back Alejandro Grimaldo should also continue in defence after making his senior debut on Thursday.

Robin Le Normand and Pau Torres's spots appear safe too, but Dani Carvajal should displace Jesus Navas, while Unai Simon is seeking to demote David Raya back down to the bench in goal.

Spain possible starting lineup: Simon; Carvajal, Le Normand, Torres, Grimaldo; Merino, Zubimendi, Ruiz; Torres, Morata, Williams
