Spain cruise to victory over Luxembourg

Spain record a comfortable 4-0 win over Luxembourg in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

Spain bounced back from their defeat to Slovakia in midweek with a 4-0 win over Luxembourg this evening in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

Manchester City playmaker David Silva gave his side the advantage with a superb long-range effort before Valencia youngster Paco Alcacer doubled the lead towards the end of the half.

Diego Costa scored his first Spain goal in the second period, before Juan Bernat finished off a neat move to wrap up the points late on.

La Roja had a number of decent openings throughout the first half with Chelsea's Costa at the centre of the action.

The centre-forward went close on 19 minutes when he fired wide of the post after bursting into the box moments after forcing Jonathan Joubert into a save.

The Chelsea star was denied again shortly before the opener when he fired straight at the goalkeeper when well placed before Silva arrowed a shot into the top corner.

Costa's frustrating first half in front of goal continued shortly after Silva's strike when he somehow fired wide under no pressure from the defence.

With the first half drawing to a close, Alcacer doubled the advantage with a smart finish to put Vicente del Bosque's side firmly in the driving seat.

Costa was finally given something to smile about with around 20 minutes remaining when he hammered home from close range for his first international goal.

Stefano Bensi almost scored Luxembourg's first ever goal against Spain on 77 minutes but his effort was well saved by David de Gea, who turned the effort away from his near post.

With just a few minutes left on the clock debutants Bernat and Rodrigo combined for the former to tuck home and extend the lead.
