Proenca to referee Euro final

Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca has been chosen to take charge of the Euro 2012 final between Spain and Italy.

Proenca has been entrusted with a number of high-profile games in recent weeks, not least the Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich last month.

The 41-year-old has already officiated games involving both finalists at the tournament, taking charge of Spain's 4-0 drubbing of Ireland and Italy's quarter-final penalty win over England.

He also took charge of Sweden's 2-0 win over France. He has yet to show a red card or award a penalty in this summer's tournament.

Proenca becomes the second referee in a row to take charge of the Champions League final and a major international final in the same year, following in the footsteps of England's Howard Webb in 2010.
