Southampton close to Toby Alderweireld deal?

Southampton have reportedly won the battle to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgium international is believed to have been in talks with Sunderland last week, while a number of other Premier League sides are also said to have been keen on the 25-year-old.

However, Goal.com now reports that Ronald Koeman has made a late move for the defender and is set to beat the Saints' Premier League rivals to the centre-back's signature.

Alderweireld joined the Spanish champions from Ajax last summer, but featured in just 12 La Liga matches last season.
