Rickie Lambert: 'We're devastated for Jay Rodriguez'

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert admits that he and his teammates are "gutted" for Jay Rodriguez after he was stretchered off against Manchester City.

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has revealed that he and his teammates are "devastated" for Jay Rodriguez after he suffered a serious injury against Manchester City.

The 23-year-old was stretchered off at the Etihad Stadium after landing awkwardly on his right knee, and could now be a major doubt for Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

"Yeah, we're gutted," Lambert told The Mirror. "Absolutely devastated for him. He's been superb for us, he's been on fire all season.

"His head has gone in there, as you can imagine. We knew straight away from seeing his face that it was bad – and it's horrible.

"A few of the lads, Jack Cork in particular, went round and said, 'Let's do this for Jay'. And we did. We tried to put in a performance for him. I think we did that."

Rodriguez has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season.
