Paul Lambert: 'Scotland will rise to Wembley occasion'

Former Scotland midfielder Paul Lambert predicts that the Tartan Army will rise to the occasion when they face England at Wembley Stadium on Friday night.

Former Scotland midfielder Paul Lambert has predicted a close result when England meet the Tartan Army at Wembley Stadium on Friday night.

England are considered the favourites to prevail in North London while Scotland are under pressure to achieve a result south of the border after a poor start to their qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.

However, new Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Lambert has backed Scotland to rise to the occasion as Gordon Strachan looks to achieve a result which could secure his immediate future in the national team dugout.

The 47-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "I guarantee their performance level will raise because of the atmosphere and because of the game that they're playing in.

"I think it's going to be a lot closer than what people think. Scotland-England, in any sport, you're never quite sure.

"It's unpredictable because of the nature of the two countries. It's a huge game for Scotland, huge game for England. Anything can happen."

Scotland will move level on points with England in Group F should they earn a surprise victory.
