Santa Clara vs Famalicao - prediction, team news, lineups

Victory this weekend would turn what has been a decent start to the 2026-27 Primeira Liga campaign into a solid one, as Santa Clara welcome Famalicao to the Azores for matchday three action.

The hosts have picked up four points from an available six in their opening two fixtures, while their visitors from Vila Nova have managed just one point from their opening two matches.

Match preview

Santa Clara are gradually looking like a side determined to make up for last season's underwhelming 13th-place finish, which was a significant drop from the historic fifth place the Azoreans achieved on their immediate return to the top flight in 2024-25.

While surrendering a two-goal lead in their opener against Nacional and settling for a 2-2 draw was not the ideal start for a side targeting an improved campaign, Petit's men made up for that setback with an efficient display in last weekend's visit to Estadio do Fontelo.

Despite having just 40% of the possession and registering two fewer attempts than their opponents' 10, the Azoreans secured a 1-0 victory over Academico de Viseu, with Goncalo Paciencia's 14th-minute penalty proving decisive.

As such, Santa Clara currently sit seventh in the Primeira Liga standings, representing a decent start to Petit's first full season at the club following his appointment in February, when he replaced Vasco Matos.

The Azoreans can strengthen their early-season European push with another victory this weekend, having won four of their most recent six home league matches, including four of the last five in 2025-26, meaning they are aiming for their first victory at Estadio de Sao Miguel this term.

Meanwhile, Famalicao have endured a stuttering start under experienced manager Carlos Carvalhal, who was appointed in July after the Vila Nova outfit missed out on European qualification despite recording a historic fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season.

After seeing his side settle for a point in their opening-day trip to Estoril Praia, Carvalhal suffered his first competitive defeat in charge in a 2-1 home loss to newly promoted Maritimo last weekend, despite Fama taking the lead through Finn van Breemen's header.

That result also ended Famalicao’s 13-match unbeaten run in the Primeira Liga, having finished the previous campaign without losing their final 12 outings, though the Vila Nova club have not suffered defeat in their last seven league matches on the road (W2, D5).

Sunday’s visitors can at least take confidence from that away record as they search for their first win of the campaign, especially as Fama face a Santa Clara side they completed a league double over last season, winning 3-0 at home before a 1-0 triumph in this very fixture in January.

Team News

Santa Clara appear to have come through their victory over Academico without any fresh injuries, leaving Matheus Araujo (MT) as their only confirmed absentee as he continues to recover from the cruciate ligament injury he sustained last season.

Paciencia's penalty last time out took his tally to three goals for the new season, leaving him behind only Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis (four) in the early Golden Boot race, and the 32-year-old forward will look to add to that tally as he leads the line once again.

It remains to be seen whether Sorisso will feature for Famalicao this weekend after the attacker was forced off injured last time out, so it would not be a surprise to see Gil Dias return to the lineup and operate on the flank.

Dias was one of three players introduced after half-time by Carvalhal, with Pedro Santos and Leny Meyer also pushing for a start, the latter hoping to make his first full competitive appearance for the club.

Although Georgios Koutsias did not have his best outing against Maritimo, the Greek forward, who scored on his competitive debut on matchday one, is expected to retain his place in the number nine role.

Santa Clara possible starting lineup:

Franca; Calila, Lima, Pacheco, Romao; Tavares, Borges; Sorriso, Ferreira, Vinicius Lopes; Paciencia

Famalicao possible starting lineup:

Carevic; Pinheiro, Realpe, Van Breemen, Meyer; Van de Looi, De Amorim; Gil Dias, Santos, Aranda; Koutsias

We say: Santa Clara 2-1 Famalicao

Santa Clara have enjoyed the better start to the campaign, and we expect that to be reflected in Sunday's clash against a Famalicao side still searching for their first win.

While the Azoreans lost both meetings last season, they completed a league double over Fama the previous term, suggesting the outcome of this fixture has often been influenced by the respective form of the two sides, and a home win looks the most likely result here.
