There was an important sliding tackle from Bournemouth's Steve Cook early on to deny Jonson Clarke-Harris as he broke into the box.
At the other end, Junior Stanislas went on a dangerous run and laid the ball off to Macdonald, but his cross was cleared.
Brindley put Rotherham in front with his first goal for the Millers since his arrival in 2013 when his low strike took a nick off a Bournemouth defender before beating Lee Camp.
The goal was a difficult one to swallow for Bournemouth, as Ian Harte's free kick had gone off the upright and onto the line moments before. The Cherries players were convinced that the ball had gone over, but the referee waved away their protests.
The hosts looked to double their advantage and displayed good energy off the ball to win it back, before Clarke-Harris tried his luck from distance with a shot that went well wide of the goal.
Stanislas wasted a great chance to draw level for Bournemouth after racing through on goal only to put his effort past the wrong side of the post.
MacDonald got an equalising goal, however, just before the interval with a side-footed finish following good work from Yann Kermorgant.
