Robbie Keane expects "emotional" night as he retires from Republic of Ireland

Robbie Keane expects "emotional" farewell

Robbie Keane has admitted that he will be "emotional" when he closes the curtain on his international career with the Republic of Ireland.

The 36-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy striker will play his 146th and final game for his nation in Wednesday's friendly against Oman at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Across an 18-year spell, Keane, who has played for Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at club level, scored 67 goals for Ireland.

In today's press conference, the striker told reporters: "It's been an emotional week. It's been surreal. I've dreaded this day for a long time [but] it's the right time for me. To the fans, it's been an incredible journey and something I'll never forget. Wednesday night will be very emotional.

"The defining moment of my career was being given the Ireland captain's armband at the age of 26. It was a big moment for me. I've had so many wonderful memories, but it's the right time. I've played for 18 years. You can't please everybody. All I ever wanted was to do my best for my country. I think I did okay."

Keane has been playing in the United States for the last five years.
