Robbie Keane likely to need surgery

LA Galaxy and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane admits that he may need surgery on a troublesome Achilles injury.

Los Angeles Galaxy and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has revealed that he may need surgery on a persistent Achilles injury.

Keane has been ruled out of Ireland's friendly against Poland on Tuesday night with the injury, although he has travelled to Poznan with the squad for the game.

The 33-year-old will have his injury assessed next Monday and has admitted that surgery was the most likely course of action during the current MLS off-season.

"It is kind of looking like that but I won't know for definite until Monday. But there is definitely something that will have to be done, and that is likely to be it," Keane told reporters when asked if he may need an operation.

"I wanted to come and always want to be involved. I have time off after - it is not like I have a game on Saturday after this week. I will see the specialist and hopefully get it all sorted out."

Keane scored his 63rd international goal for Ireland during Friday's 3-0 win over Latvia, which was also new manager Martin O'Neill's first game in charge of the team.
