James McCarthy expects to be fit for Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 opener

McCarthy provides Ireland fitness boost

James McCarthy has claimed that he is expected to be fit for Republic of Ireland's opening group game against Sweden at Euro 2016 following an injury concern.

The Everton midfielder has been a doubt for the tournament ever since he suffered problems to his groin and hamstring in his club's season-ending 3-0 win over Norwich City last month.

However, the 25-year-old has been working on his rehabilitation and was able to take part in full training under the watchful eye of manager Martin O'Neill.

When asked by reporters if he will be fit for the opener on June 13, McCarthy said: "Yes, I should be fine. I've trained with the team the last couple of days and hopefully now I can step it up. It's obviously good to be back training again with the squad and hopefully now I can kick on and step up the fitness."

Ireland will also face Belgium and Italy in their group fixtures.
