Caen ease relegation worries with thrashing of Rennes

Rennes suffered a second-half collapse as relegation-threatened Caen recorded a comprehensive 4-1 victory in this afternoon's Ligue 1 clash at the Stade de la Route-de-Lorient.

The visitors took the lead after just four minutes played when Julien Feret's cross into the box was nodded home by Sloan Privat.

However, Rennes managed to find the equaliser on the quarter-hour mark, Christian Bruls slotting the ball through to Benjamin Andre, who slammed a shot past goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre and into the net.

The visitors pushed forward following their goal and had the better of things in the remainder of the first half, as Ola Toivonen and Sylvain Armand threatened time and time again.

They would come to rue those misses because Lenny Nangis put Caen in front again in the 51st minute, collecting Feret's through-ball and tucking the ball home from a tight angle.

The visitors made sure of all three points four minutes from time when Feret bore down on goal before sending a low shot into the bottom corner of the Rennes net.

Damien De Silva then added a fourth in injury time, a rocket into the top corner which gave the visiting fans reason to cheer and hope that Patrice Garande's charges have turned a corner.

The result means that Caen now sit just one point from safety in 18th place, while Rennes are 10th.
