Jorge Valdano says that Jose Mourinho's record of one league title in two years at Real Madrid is an "average" record.

Former Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has said that Jose Mourinho's coaching record at the Spanish club is "average".

Mourinho won the Copa del Rey in the 2010-11 season, La Liga in 2011-12 and then the Spanish Super Cup in August.

"Since [Alfredo] Di Stefano's era, Real Madrid have won more titles than all the other Spanish teams together," Valdano told Fox Sports.

"That means the team wins a title every two years. Mourinho is within the average - he has taken two years and has won a title."

Valdano added that Mourinho's "desperation" to win will always make top clubs in Europe want him.

"Tactical technicians are gaining importance in football," said the 57-year-old. "Mourinho is associated with the word victory.

"He has won seven league titles in 10 years and the desperation to win remains with him. It's why people like him will always have [a] market. He's a safe bet."

Valdano coached Real Madrid in the 1990s and won La Liga in the 1994-95 campaign.
