The visitors made a comfortable start to the match, controlling possession and getting the first chance of the match, as Isco fired a low shot wide of the Malmo goal.
Malmo could have taken an early lead on the break, as Anton Tinnerholm tested Madrid keeper Keylor Navas with a low drive, before Markus Rosenberg forced a decent save from the Costa Rican international.
Ronaldo missed two chances to open the scoring, as the Portuguese international forced a low save from Malmo keeper Johand Wiland, before the winger cut inside from the left to fire a shot straight at the Swede.
The 30-year-old did manage to score at the third time of asking on 29 minutes, as a quick counter-attack saw Isco thread a pass through to the Madrid talisman, who placed his shot into the corner of the net.
Madrid full-back Dani Carvajal almost doubled his side's advantage before the break, but the Spanish international's volley from a tight angle struck the crossbar.
