Poland defeat Georgia to maintain Group D advantage

Poland maintain Group D advantage

A second-half strike from Arkadiusz Milik and a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick proved more than enough to give Poland maximum points in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia, and maintain their position as Group D leaders.

The home side controlled the opening stages of the match and almost found themselves in front in the 10th minute when Kamil Grosicki combined with Lukasz Piszczek before shooting inches wide.

Grosicki nearly went one better three minutes later as he got a shot away on target, only to be denied by Giorgi Loria in the Georgia goal.

Lewandowski could have had a treble in the first half, but was twice thwarted by Grosicki before scuffing a shot in front of goal in the 33rd minute.

Georgia created a handful of chances of their own, but Poland took a deserved lead just after the hour through Milik, who drilled the ball home from outside the box after the visitors failed to deal with Krzysztof Maczynski's corner.

Lewandowski was the star of the show late on, completing a sensational hat-trick in the space of four minutes to single-handedly make the 4-0 scoreline more reflective of Poland's dominance.

The results leaves the Poles four points clear of Germany at the top of Group D, but the Germans can reduce their lead to a point by defeating Gibraltar later this evening.
