Rob Elliot called up to Republic of Ireland squad

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot replaces Darren Randolph in Noel King's Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has been drafted into Noel King's Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan.

The 27-year-old replaces Birmingham City keeper Darren Randolph, who injured his shoulder in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Bolton.

Elliot, who was born in Chatham, England, has not represented Ireland since keeping goal at Under-19 level in 2004.

Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney, who was called up to the provisional squad earlier this week, remains in the fold.

Meanwhile, Stoke City forward Jonathan Walters's availability for Ireland's game with Germany on October 11 is in doubt after he was substituted during the Potters' 1-0 defeat at Fulham because of a groin complaint.

Paul McShane, Stephen Quinn and Paul Green have been placed on stand-by.
