Jonjo Shelvey has reportedly been cleared to play a part in Newcastle United's trip to Southampton next weekend, despite breaking a finger in training.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey reportedly broke a finger during a training session earlier this week and will play with a plaster cast against Southampton.

The 25-year-old is said to have been taken to hospital after picking up the injury on Thursday afternoon, where an X-ray revealed the damage.

According to The Sun, however, the England international hopeful is not facing any time on the sidelines, as he has been given the all-clear to play a part in next weekend's trip to the South Coast with a lightweight cast.

Shelvey stood out in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with former club Liverpool last time out, leading to calls for the midfielder to earn a Three Lions recall.

Chris Waddle and Graeme Souness have both suggested this week that Shelvey is worthy of a place in the England fold ahead of next year's World Cup finals.
