Krul suffers elbow ligament damage

Newcastle United have revealed that first-choice goalkeeper Tim Krul has suffered elbow ligament damage.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury while training with the Netherlands on international duty this week.

He stayed with the Dutch squad to be named on the bench for the 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan on Friday, but flew back to England immediately afterwards and underwent a scan on Monday.

The Magpies' medical staff will continue to asses Krul's fitness ahead of their Premier League fixture with Leicester City this weekend, with back-up stopper Rob Elliot on standby for a first start of the season.

Krul has made 141 appearances for Newcastle since making his debut in 2006.
