Dirk Kuyt revels in "special day"

Dirk Kuyt says that Sunday was a "special day" for him after earning his 100th Netherlands cap.

Dirk Kuyt has reflected on the "special day" which saw his 100th cap for the Netherlands coincide with the Oranje's progression to the quarter-final of the World Cup.

Late goals from Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar helped Louis van Gaal's side beat Mexico 2-1 on Sunday to book their place in the last-eight stage of the tournament.

The Fenerbahce man became the seventh Dutch player in the nation's history to earn centurion status, and Kuyt admits that he is a "very proud person".

"It's amazing, a special day for me," he told FIFA.com.

"To become the seventh player in the history of Dutch football to reach 100 caps, and to finish the game like that, is amazing.

"I'm a very proud person; I'm very proud of the team and the team spirit. We kept fighting until the end and we're very happy with the result."

Netherlands face Costa Rica in the next round following their dramatic penalty shootout win over Greece.
