Ronald de Boer: 'Netherlands Euro 2016 failure is a disaster'

Former Netherlands international Ronald de Boer says that the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2016 is a "disaster".

Former Netherlands international Ronald de Boer has said that the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2016 is a "disaster" for the country.

Danny Blind's side saw their hopes of qualification ended as they lost 3-2 to the Czech Republic in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening.

Blind took charge in June after Guus Hiddink stepped down but De Boer, who played 67 times for the Netherlands from 1993 to 2003, has claimed that there is not enough quality in the current side.

"It's a disaster, of course," he told talkSPORT. "Before the qualification started a lot of people already thought Holland would be at Euro 2016.

"At this moment we don't have the quality, we don't have the players who can make a difference. We don't have Arjen Robben [currently out through injury] and Robin van Persie, though I don't write him off, isn't the competitor he was at Arsenal and Manchester United.

"We don't have players who can really replace those guys."

Netherlands, who have failed to qualify for a tournament for the first time since the 2002 World Cup, last missed out on the European Championships in 1984.
