Man United's Lewis Hall position 'explained' as Newcastle United announce long-term deal for defensive star

Newcastle United have revealed that Lewis Hall has signed a new long-term contract at the club.

Hall was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer transfer window, with the 20-time English champions believed to have made him their leading left-back target.

However, Newcastle were unwilling to do business, and it has now been announced that the 22-year-old has penned a new contract at St James' Park until the summer of 2031.

“I'm absolutely delighted. It's a really proud moment. It's an absolute pleasure to play for this club and to represent the supporters. I know how much it means to them," Hall told Newcastle's official website.

“The fanbase and the support we get here, whether it's at St. James’ Park or away, it's the best in the league in my opinion. To be able to bring joy to their faces, it's a big thing for me.

Hall signs new long-term contract at Newcastle

“I obviously have a family connection with the club, which is incredibly important to us all. One of the main reasons I play is to make my family proud, and I know how much it means to them to watch me playing for Newcastle United.

“It's a really good place to be. It's really pleasing with how we've started the season, especially with the new Gaffer and coaching staff coming in, and I think we can go on to achieve really big things.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle's new head coach Matthias Jaissle said: “I have been impressed with Lewis since I arrived. He is a very important player for us and for what we are building here, so this is exciting news.

“The combination of his ability and his profile make him an ideal fit for our squad, and his mentality is exactly what you want in a young player. He wants to learn every day and he wants to be better in every match.

“Lewis covers ground in a way that few players can. He defends with maturity and intelligence, and his technical level means he can support the team higher up the pitch.

"What excites me most is that I believe the best is still to come from Lewis. He has a lot of room to develop, and I am looking forward to working with him as he grows with us."

Hall has been with Newcastle since July 2024, arriving from Chelsea, and he has represented the Magpies on 107 occasions, scoring three goals and registering nine assists.

Where does Hall's new deal leave Man United?

On the face of it, a new contract for Hall makes it a lot more difficult for Man United to sign him.

However, according to talkSPORT, the new deal does not mean that Man United will not attempt to secure his services during next summer's transfer window.

While Newcastle's position has been strengthened, the new contract might not change too much, especially if Man United make a strong attempt to sign him in 2027.

It is clear that the Red Devils want to sign a new left-back next year, with Luke Shaw entering the latter stages of his career.

There are plenty of names on Man United's shortlist, but it is understood that Hall remains at the top, and this is not the end of the transfer saga despite confirmation of the fresh terms.
