Frenkie de Jong father hints at Barcelona move

The father of in-demand Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong suggests that Barcelona would be his son's preferred destination ahead of Manchester United or Manchester City.

The father of in-demand Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong has suggested that Barcelona are leading the race for his son's signature.

The 21-year-old's form has seen him linked with a number of Europe's top clubs, including the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Frenkie's father John de Jong has confirmed that his son will almost certainly leave Ajax next summer, and he believes that Barcelona would be the preferred destination before financial details are discussed.

"He must decide himself and he is smart enough to make that decision," John de Jong told Voetbal Primeur.

"Frenkie will probably ask himself this question in spring. However, he is not short of options. He will leave Ajax - that is 95% certain.

"A team that actually plays football would suit him best. All of the clubs interested in him are ones with teams that play. In terms of climate, Barcelona would be best. However, the financial aspect remains to be seen."

De Jong, who is expected to fetch a price of at least €75m (£67.9m), has scored two goals and assisted one more in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.
