Team News: Louis van Gaal drops Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney at Stoke City

Wayne Rooney drops to the bench as Manchester United visit Stoke City in the first of 10 Premier League Boxing Day matches.

Wayne Rooney has dropped to the bench for Manchester United's visit to Stoke City in the first of 10 Premier League Boxing Day matches.

Rooney, the United captain, started the 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich a week ago but has not kept his place as Louis van Gaal replaces him with Ander Herrera.

Rooney has never started a Premier League or Champions League match on the bench under Van Gaal and it is the only change in the United XI as the visitors seek a first win in seven.

Stoke, meanwhile, also make just the one change and it comes in defensive midfield as the returning Geoff Cameron gets the nod over Marco van Ginkel.

Left-back Erik Pieters continues his record of starting every league game this season just hours after signing a new long-term contract with the Potters.

Stoke City: Butland; Johnson, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Pieters; Whelan, Cameron; Shaqiri, Afellay, Arnautovic; Bojan
Subs: Haugaard, Joselu, Wilson, Van Ginkel, Adam, Diouf, Walters

Manchester United: De Gea; Young, Smalling, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Herrera; Mata, Fellaini, Memphis; Martial
Subs: Romero, Borthwick-Jackson, McNair, Varela, Pereira, Schneiderlin, Rooney
