Louis van Gaal: 'Anthony Martial not distracted by potential goalscoring record'

Louis van Gaal says that Anthony Martial is not distracted by the prospect of being the first United player to score in their first four Premier League games.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has played down expectations over Anthony Martial potentially breaking a club record in tomorrow's match against Sunderland.

The 19-year-old, who signed for the Red Devils from Monaco for £36m on the final day of the transfer window, could become the first United player to score in their first four Premier League matches.

"I don't think [he is distracted] because he doesn't read the papers," Van Gaal told reporters. "Maybe he hears it from his fellow players, but I don't think his fellow players will say that he can break the record.

"His personality is that he's an open guy. He's listening, he's focusing on the matches. He's a coachable player, that's why I like him and I bought him."

Martial scored twice in last weekend's 3-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary's.
