Top five Premier League midfield goalscorers

Sports Mole looks over the five leading midfield goalscorers in the history of the Premier League.

As our previous piece shows here, nine years ago today, Tim Cahill signed for Everton.

He would go on to earn himself a reputation as a midfielder with a keen eye for goal, scoring 56 times in the Premier League before his departure to New York Red Bulls in 2012.

However, there are some midfielders who have managed to outscore the Australian. Here, Sports Mole takes a look at the top five goalscoring midfielders since the Premier League was introduced back in 1992.

Gary Speed - Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United & Bolton Wanderers

Welshman Speed featured in the Premier League from its inception and went on to make 533 appearances for four different clubs. His best return came during the 1993-94 season when he hit 10 goals for Leeds and scored 81 in total. Sadly, Speed is no longer with us after he took his own life in November 2011, aged 42.

Steven Gerrard, Liverpool

At times, it would be no exaggeration to say that Gerrard has carried Liverpool. Some people even joked that is why he required shoulder surgery this summer! When the Reds were title challengers between 2007 and 2009, Gerrard found the net on 27 occasions. He will start next season just two short of his century.

Paul Scholes, Manchester United

Such is the esteem that Scholes is held in by his fellow professionals that the likes of Xavi and Zinedine Zidane rank him as the best opponent they have ever faced. He started his career as a striker and continued to show his awareness inside the penalty area throughout his career. He retired for a second time this summer with 107 goals to his name.

Ryan Giggs, Manchester United

Two goals ahead of Scholes is his former United teammate Giggs, who with his 40th birthday approaching, continues to defy logic. He has scored in every Premier League season, including a best total of 13 during the 1993-94 campaign. He has signed up for another year and will no doubt be eager to keep that record going.

Frank Lampard - West Ham & Chelsea

It was hard to fathom why Chelsea were so reluctant to offer Lampard a new deal last season. Even though his body may not allow him to play 90 minutes every week, the 35-year-old still scored 15 times in 2012-13. Thankfully for Chelsea fans, the incoming Jose Mourinho sorted out his future and he will resume next term on 165 goals from 550 appearances - most strikers would be happy with that record.
