Memphis Depay: 'I can live up to pressures of number seven shirt'

Memphis Depay vows to restore pride to Manchester United's iconic number seven shirt following Angel di Maria's exit.

Manchester United new boy Memphis Depay has claimed that he can cope with the pressure of wearing the club's iconic number seven shirt.

The Dutchman brought a sizeable reputation with him to Old Trafford after netting 28 times for PSV Eindhoven last term to secure a £25m move.

If the pressure of having that price tag was not enough, the 21-year-old increased expectation by requesting to take the number seven - previously worn by George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Angel di Maria's departure had left the number vacant, and Memphis vows to restore its pride after the Argentine winger endured a troubled year-long spell with the Red Devils.

"Yes, of course [I'm aware of the pressure] and the history," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I appreciate the history, but I want to be my own man. It's an honour to wear the number seven and I will wear it with pride.

"Last year I played with seven on my back [for PSV] and I scored a lot of goals so I am confident with that number."

Memphis endured a relatively quiet debut in Saturday's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
