Juan Mata urges David de Gea to snub Real Madrid and stay at Manchester United

Juan Mata hopes to see Manchester United teammate David de Gea snub Real Madrid in favour of staying at Manchester United.

Juan Mata has said that he is desperate to see in-form goalkeeper David de Gea stay at Manchester United amid speculation linking him with Real Madrid.

De Gea has emerged as a reported target of the Spanish giants following a stellar season for United, and was nominated for PFA Player of the Year.

The Spain keeper enhanced his reputation further with another exemplary performance in Saturday's 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

His compatriot and club teammate Mata admits that he does not know what the 24-year-old's plans are, but hopes that staying at Old Trafford is among them.

Asked if he will stay, Mata told IBTimes: "I don't know. To be honest, I don't know. Ask him because I don't know. I understand how important he is for us.

"Against Crystal Palace he proved it again with a save that gave us the three points.

"I want him to stay. Being selfish, I obviously hope he remains with us. He gives us many points."

De Gea is tipped to replace the ageing Iker Casillas at the Santiago Bernabeu, though it was reported that the 33-year-old will remain at the club until 2017.
