Jordan Henderson: 'Wayne Rooney is ideal England captain'

Jordan Henderson believes that Wayne Rooney is the "ideal choice" to succeed Steven Gerrard as England captain.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has said that Wayne Rooney is the "ideal choice" to captain the Three Lions.

The Manchester United forward has been given the armband by manager Roy Hodgson following Steven Gerrard's retirement from international football.

Henderson believes that Rooney is the natural successor to his Liverpool teammate Gerrard.

"I think Wayne was the ideal choice, really," he told the Northern Echo. "He is a natural leader in the dressing room and also on the field as well.

"I think it was a really good appointment and I don't think it'll change the way he is, to be honest. He will keep doing everything like he always does, he gives 100% whether that is in training or matches.

"Also he will help the younger lads and I am sure he will have a lot of respect in the dressing room."

England take on Norway in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday.
