Rio Ferdinand: 'English player valuations are a joke'

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, once the world's most expensive defender, describes transfer fees linked to English players as "a joke".

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has hit out at the cost of English footballers in the transfer market, describing the purported fees as "a joke".

The Red Devils have been linked with a £50m move for 21-year-old Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer, while Manchester City have had a £40m bid rejected for Liverpool's 20-year-old Raheem Sterling.

Ferdinand added on Twitter that players like City striker Sergio Aguero and Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez represent better value.

The 36-year-old, who retired from football in May, was the world's most expensive defender when he joined Man Utd for £29.1m in 2002.
