David de Gea has insisted that he is "very happy" with life at Manchester United, despite coming close to leaving the club for Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The Spaniard was on the verge of moving to the Bernabeu in the final week of the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through at the last minute due to paperwork not being filed in time.
Despite plans to move, De Gea ended up signing a new four-year contract at Old Trafford last month.
"It was a long summer, a tough summer," Bernabeu Digital quote De Gea saying. "But after it all, I am in a great club and I am very happy. I renewed my contract and I'm very happy. This is a great club and I hope everything goes well.
"It was a special summer, as I said, but I believe things happen for a reason. I'm in a club where I feel very accepted, respected, loved and am very happy."
United are currently third in the Premier League table after eight games.
