Berbatov: Not playing is "painful"

Dimitar Berbatov has said that rarely featuring for Manchester United has been a "sad and painful" experience.

The Bulgarian frontman has only started on five occasions in the league this term and has fallen behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order for a starting place up front.

"It's just about being ready," the 31-year-old told United Review.

"We have a big squad and you know sometimes you are not going to play.

"It's sad and it's painful but you need to be strong and be prepared for when your teammates need your help."

Despite his lack of appearances, Berbatov is still United's joint third top scorer with nine goals and he feels that he still has a chance to impress Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Every time I have played I think I have done well," he added.

"I'm ready and waiting whenever the boss gives me a chance to show my quality and deliver."

The former Tottenham man will be hoping to feature when United host West Brom tomorrow.
