Mick McCarthy targets another Louis van Gaal upset

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy admits that he would like to beat Manchester United in the League Cup and claim another surprise result against Louis van Gaal.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has stated that he would like to knock Manchester United out of the League Cup when the sides meet on Wednesday and claim another scalp against Louis van Gaal.

McCarthy was in charge of the Republic of Ireland when they claimed a famous victory over Van Gaal's Netherlands at Lansdowne Road in 2001, which put them into the playoffs for the 2002 World Cup.

The Ipswich boss has admitted that while a win at Old Trafford would be a fine result, promotion remains the ultimate aim for his side this season.

"I am not even sure I really remember it, [but] that was a great day for me and Ireland, we got in the playoffs and won that against Iran so ended up in the World Cup, which was brilliant," McCarthy told Sky Sports News.

"In his career he might not even remember me - I guess people will be asking him now and he might say 'oh yeah' like [it was] an irritation, but I will be shaking hands with him like I do every single manager before and after.

"It would be great if we won at Old Trafford but then if we get beat on Saturday, everyone will be clambering around and we will be back to square one because we have lost points in the league."

Ipswich follow up their trip to United with a Championship clash against Bristol City.
