How every Premier League season would have finished after gameweek 29: 2009-10

Given the current uncertainty over the resumption of the Premier League, Sports Mole looks at how the 2009-10 season would have ended after gameweek 29.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought the Premier League season to a standstill and it remains to be seen whether the campaign will conclude.

Top-flight clubs met again on Friday to discuss 'Project Restart', with a return in early June being mooted.

However, the longer the uncertainty goes on, the more likely it seems that an alternative plan will have to be found.

That could mean declaring 2019-20 null and void, or possibly freezing the table as it stands - either way, all 20 teams face an anxious wait over their final positions.

Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie are the most high-profile divisions to end their campaigns early, but what would have happened if previous Premier League seasons finished after gameweek 29?

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the 2009-10 campaign, which saw Chelsea end Manchester United's three-year title reign en route to winning the double.

Chelsea finished the season one point better off than United in a gripping title race that went down to the final day.

Had the campaign been brought to a close after the 29th round of the matches, however, the Red Devils would have been crowned champions once again.

United were two points clear of Chelsea at that point, but Carlo Ancelotti's men took advantage of their game in hand and won seven of their last eight games, including a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Arsenal were very much in the title mix with nine games to play, finding themselves two points off top spot in third, but they finished 11 points behind the eventual champions.

That was still enough to maintain third place, with Tottenham Hotspur completing the top four after holding off fifth-placed Manchester City over the final two months to secure Champions League football.

In fact, the top seven remained constant between gameweek 29 and the conclusion of the season, though Aston Villa climbed above Liverpool to finish in sixth place.

That was also the case in terms of the bottom three as Portsmouth, Hull City and Burnley were unable to make up the points deficit on West Ham United and Wigan Athletic.
