Manchester United's wins in Germany

Ahead of their meeting with Bayern Munich, Sports Mole looks back at all of Manchester United's victories in Germany.

If Manchester United are to secure their spot in the semi-finals of this season's Champions League tonight, they must either record a victory or a score draw of 2-2 or more against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

The Red Devils have made 13 separate trips to take on Bundesliga clubs in European competitions, from which they've recorded six victories.

With that in mind and United in need of a positive result this evening, Sports Mole looks back on each of those wins.

1. Borussia Dortmund 1-6 Man United, November 1964

Having knocked Dortmund out at the second-round stage of the European Cup in 1956, United were paired with the Germans again in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup eight years later. The first leg inside the Stadion Rote Erde saw Sir Matt Busby's side run riot, with Sir Bobby Charlton helping himself to a hat-trick, while George Best, Denis Law and David Herd added further goals. Dortmund midfielder Dieter Kurrat scored a consolation from the penalty spot for the hosts.

2. Vorwarts Berlin 0-2 Man United, November 1965

Back in the European Cup after a seven-year absence, late goals from Charlton and John Connelly handed United a comfortable first-leg advantage from their trip to Berlin. A hat-trick from Herd in the return meeting eased the English side into round two.

3. Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Man United, September 2002

Having been dumped out by Leverkusen at the semi-final stage of the Champions League during the previous campaign, United were pitted against the same opponents during the next season's group stages. Centre-forward Ruud van Nistelrooy scored two goals before the break and although future United striker Dimitar Berbatov reduced the arrears after the restart, United held out to claim all three points.

4. Wolfsburg 1-3 Man United, December 2009

There were not many highlights to Michael Owen's injury-ravaged stint with United, but he did produce a memorable performance inside the Volkswagen Arena. The former England international struck three times, two of which came during the closing stages, to secure the points for United. Wolfsburg's goal was scored by Edin Dzeko, who signed for Manchester City in January 2011.

5. Schalke 04 0-2 Man United, April 2011

Few Champions League semi-finals have been as one-sided as this one. Schalke had defeated Valencia and Inter Milan en route to the last four, but they were blown away in Gelsenkirchen by United. Quickfire second-half goals from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney put United in charge of the tie, before they went on to book their place in the final courtesy of a 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

6. Bayern Leverkusen 0-5 Man United, November 2013

Although there are not many other candidates, this was perhaps United's best performance to date under the management of David Moyes. Antonio Valencia got the ball rolling with a goal from close range, before Emir Spahic put through his own net. After the restart, defenders Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans got their names on their scoresheet, with Nani completing the romp two minutes from time.
