Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

David Silva's fifth goal of the season allows Manchester City to beat Arsenal and return to the top of the Premier League table.

David Silva's fifth goal of the season was enough to hand Manchester City all three points from their home encounter with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Both teams created chances in an end-to-end match, but it was Silva's 52nd-minute intervention that proved to be the difference.

Sergio Aguero spurned the first chance of the match with seven minutes played, shooting over the crossbar following a cross from Pablo Zabaleta.

In reply Arsenal winger Gervinho forced Joe Hart to palm away his low effort in the 17th minute.

Wojciech Szczesny then came to Arsenal's rescue on two occasions as the half drew to a close to deny Mario Balotelli and and Aguero.

Silva struck the decisive goal seven minutes after the restart. Szczesny failed to hold Balotelli's initial shot and after Aguero had flicked the ball on, Silva was on hand to score from close range.

Immediatley after falling behind, Theo Walcott produced a good save from Hart, who tipped the England international's effort over the bar.

Hart was soon called into action to deny Robin van Persie's low effort.

As Arsenal attacked, they left gaps in defence and Pablo Zabaleta almost extended City's lead but his 20-yard effort struck the post.

The Gunners were unable to find an equaliser despite a late effort from Thomas Vermaelen, meaning that City return to the top of the Premier League.
