Pep Guardiola's side are on course to create a new benchmark for the biggest aggregate winning margin.

Manchester City need only a three-goal win in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Burton to make history.

Leading 9-0 from the first leg two weeks ago, Pep Guardiola's men have the chance to set a new record for the biggest aggregate winning margin in the League Cup's history.

The record stands at 11 and here, Press Association Sport looks back at the five times that feat has been achieved – all in the early rounds of the competition.

Liverpool 11 Exeter 0, 1981-82

The previous record was 'just' 8-0 on aggregate, by Southampton against Wrexham two years earlier. The Reds blew that out of the water with the first double-figure margin, winning 5-0 at home and 6-0 at St James Park with Ian Rush scoring twice in each leg.

West Ham 12 Bury 1, 1983-84

There seemed little prospect of such a rout when the Hammers won just 2-1 in the first leg but a 10-0 second leg, with four goals from a 19-year-old Tony Cottee, changed the complexion of the tie.

Liverpool 13 Fulham 2, 1986-87

That 12-1 aggregate was a record high until surpassed by Liverpool against Fulham in 1986. Steve McMahon scored four and missed a penalty in a 10-0 win at Anfield, with Rush and John Wark also scoring twice apiece, and a 3-2 second leg – with McMahon again on target – set a new highest aggregate.

Watford 11 Darlington 0, 1987-88

Watford got in on the act the following year with an 11-0 aggregate win over Darlington, winning 3-0 in the north-east and then 8-0 back at Vicarage Road with seven different scorers including a Peter Hetherston double.

Everton 11 Wrexham 0, 1990-91

Cottee was at it again as his new employers ran riot, scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 first-leg win in north Wales and opening the scoring in a 6-0 win at Goodison Park before strike partner Graeme Sharp took centre stage with a treble.
