Malaga finished a disappointing season with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Levante at La Rosaleda Stadium.
Francisco Portillo scored the only goal of the game on the hour mark, but the three points could not lift Bernd Schuster's side into the top half of the La Liga table.
In what was the German coach's last match in charge of Malaga, Eliseu Pereira and Ignacio Camacho both fired wide in the early stages, before Levante stopper Keylor Navas denied Ezequiel Rescaldani.
Navas was also called upon to make good saves from Nordin Amrabat and Pablo Perez as the hosts dominated the first half, despite Levante entering the match on the back of two successive victories.
Levante's keeper continued to be in fine form in the second period, but the rebound from Amrabat's shot fell to Portillo, who converted from close range for only his third goal in 25 appearances this season.
Papakouli Diop, who picked up a yellow card midway through the first half, was sent off nine minutes from time for a late lunge on Portillo, and another foul, by Alberto Nagore on Juanmi, gifted Malaga a penalty.
However, in stoppage time, substitute Jose Manuel Casado blazed over the crossbar from 12 yards. Joaquin Caparros's Levante finish ninth in the league, two points above Malaga.
