Luton Town can match Wimbledon's record of fastest rise from the fifth tier to the top flight if they beat Coventry in the Championship playoff final at Wembley tomorrow.

Luton Town could equal Wimbledon's record for the fastest ascent to the top flight should they beat Coventry City in the Championship playoff final on Saturday.

Wimbledon currently hold the record after taking just nine years to go from the fifth tier to the top flight between 1977 and 1986.

Luton were only promoted from the National League in 2014 and can therefore match the record with promotion to the Premier League this season.

Should they achieve promotion, it would be the first time the club have played top-flight football since the 1991-92 season, the campaign before the inception of the Premier League.

However, the Hatters have lost in five of their seven trips to Wembley, including their most recent - the 2012 Conference playoff final against York City.

Another bad omen is that the side who finishes third in the Championship often fail to complete the job in the playoffs, as five of the last eight sides to finish in that position have then lost in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, opponents Coventry can also complete a similarly meteoric rise having played in League Two with Luton in 2017-18.

Manager Mark Robins could join a group of just seven other managers to win promotion from the fourth, third and second division with the same club should they come out on top.
