Liverpool announce that Joe Gomez will miss the Champions League final and the World Cup with England after undergoing ankle surgery.

Liverpool have confirmed that Joe Gomez will miss the Champions League final and the World Cup after undergoing ankle surgery.

Earlier on Tuesday, a report suggested that Gomez would be absent from the Kiev showdown with Real Madrid but remained with a chance of representing England at the World Cup in June.

However, Liverpool have moved to clarify the situation, stating that the 20-year-old would not be available to return to training until July.

In March, Gomez sustained an ankle injury while representing the Three Lions in a friendly with the Netherlands, but the youngster returned after a month on the sidelines to feature in two top-flight contests for the Merseyside giants.

The player has missed the last three fixtures, however, and will now aim to regain full fitness when pre-season begins later in the summer.

Gomez ends the campaign having made a total of 30 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.
