Alexander-Arnold replacement: Liverpool 'hold advanced talks' over move to sign Bundesliga star

Liverpool 'hold advanced talks' over move to sign Alexander-Arnold replacement

Liverpool have reportedly held advanced talks over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

The Reds are set to bid farewell to academy product Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has announced that he will leave when his contract expires this summer.

He is widely expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, with the only uncertainty surrounding his availability for the Club World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold's departure could give his current deputy, Conor Bradley, the chance to make the right-back spot his own.

However, Liverpool are likely to delve into the transfer market to sign a new right-sided defender in the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool step up Frimpong pursuit

Leverkusen's Frimpong is among those who have been linked with a potential move to Anfield ahead of the 2025-26 season.

According to journalist Florian Plettenburg, Liverpool are in 'advanced talks' over a move to sign Leverkusen's Frimpong.

The update claims that the Reds are 'seriously pursuing' a transfer, having identified the Dutchman as one of their 'top options' to replace Alexander-Arnold.

He is said to be ready for a summer move, which would bring an end to his four-and-a-half-year stay at BayArena.

Frimpong is under contract until the summer of 2028, but his deal contains a release clause in the region of €35m (£29.5m) to €40m (£33.7m).

Is Frimpong a suitable signing?

The Netherlands international has tended to play as a wing-back rather than a traditional full-back under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen.

As a result, he would have to adapt to operate on the right side of a back four under Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.

With that in mind, there may be concerns as to whether Frimpong has the defensive qualities to play as a full-back.

However, he would certainly add to Liverpool's attacking play, demonstrated by the fact that he has scored five goals and contributed 12 assists in 48 competitive appearance this season.
