Alexander Isak's first words as Liverpool player as Reds confirm British-record £125m Newcastle transfer

It is over. It is done. How the Isak saga unfolded as Liverpool confirm record signing

Liverpool have finally confirmed the historic signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British record deal.

The Sweden international has joined the Premier League champions for an unprecedented fee of £125m, making him the most expensive signing in the history of the Reds and the history of English football.

Isak is understood to have penned a six-year contract with Arne Slot's side until the summer of 2031, and he will wear the number nine shirt during his time at Anfield.

Isak follows in the footsteps of many an iconic striker to sport the '9' for Liverpool - most notably all-time leading scorer Ian Rush - while Roberto Firmino, Fernandes Torres and Robbie Fowler also enjoyed stints as the Reds' number nine.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com in his first interview since his transfer was announced, Isak said: "I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for.

"It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there."

Isak established a reputation as one of the Premier League's most feared strikers during a successful three-year stint at St James' Park, where he had a direct hand in 73 goals in 109 games for Eddie Howe's side, 62 of his own and 11 assists.

Only new teammate Mohamed Salah struck more goals in the Premier League than Isak during the 2024-25 campaign, as the Scandinavian found the back of the net 23 times for the Magpies before things turned sour between himself and the club.

However, Isak's bold tactics eventually paid off, and the 25-year-old has set himself some incredibly lofty ambitions at Anfield, adding: "I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve.

"I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that]."

How the Isak saga unfolded as Liverpool confirm record transfer

It is over. It is done.

Nothing less than a record-breaking offer would do if Liverpool were to prise Isak away from Newcastle, whose steadfast stance over the former Real Sociedad striker was enough to put both Arsenal and Chelsea off a blockbuster deal.

However, the Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes-inspired Reds had the cash to splash this summer, and after Liverpool tried their luck with a first bid worth £110m in August, Isak made no secret of his desire to join the reigning champions.

The Swede took extremely drastic measures to try to force a move through - refusing to train and freezing himself out of the squad - while Newcastle were insistent on £150m or nothing for their most prized asset, but the situation quickly became untenable for the club.

Isak went public with his criticism of Newcastle when he snubbed the PFA Awards, triggering a defensive response from the EFL Cup winners, but the soap opera was realistically only going to end one way; with Isak in the famous red strip.

Added to the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Liverpool's summer spending has topped an astronomical £416m. On the other end, Howe may even breathe a slight sigh of relief; no more of the same old Isak questions in press conferences for him.
