Liverpool transfer news: Marc Guehi makes bold future 'decision' after failed transfer move

Guehi makes bold future 'decision' after failed Liverpool move

Marc Guehi has reportedly decided to reject any further contract offers from Crystal Palace

The Eagles agreed a deal in the region of £35m for the former Chelsea defender, but the move collapsed in the final hours of deadline day after Oliver Glasner threatened to walk away if the player was sold.

Palace failed to sign several centre-back targets this summer, including Igor Julio, and Glasner was unwilling to let Guehi depart without signing a replacement, which was not possible as they ran out of time.

The 25-year-old is reportedly unhappy about how the Eagles handled his situation, and he is considering stepping down from the captaincy.

Boost for Liverpool as Guehi makes future decision?

Guehi had agreed a five-year deal with the Premier League champions, and he was waiting at their London office during the latter stages of deadline day.

The defender will become a free agent next summer, and there are high chances that Liverpool could move for him again in the January window, although he would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club.

According to a report from The Times, Guehi has now decided that he will reject any offer of a new contract from Palace, and he is prepared to leave as a free agent next summer.

Palace previously rejected offers from Newcastle United last summer and Tottenham Hotspur in January for Guehi, each worth more than £65m.

Liverpool need Guehi in January

The Reds wanted Guehi throughout the summer, and they will be disappointed with how the situation unfolded on deadline day.

It has been a massive transfer window for Liverpool, where they spent over £440m, but they failed to sign a proven Premier League defender, which was required.

The Premier League champions signed Italy youngster Giovanni Leoni, but he is seen as a player for the future. As it stands, Arne Slot will have to rely on Joe Gomez to step up as a reliable back-up option.

While there is no doubt about Gomez's quality, his fitness remains a major issue. The Reds, therefore, should make another attempt in January to lure Guehi away from Selhurst Park.
